Different days are observed.- Finally in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued a White House proclamation calling on ‘the whole American people to observe a special day of Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of November of every year.’

ILLUS: I’m sure it wouldn’t surprise you to know that some people are pretty dedicated fans when it comes to football. It kind of reminds me of the following story.

A young man was very excited because he had just won a ticket to the Super Bowl. His excitement lessened as he realized his seat was in the back of the stadium. As he searched the rows ahead of him for a better seat, he found an empty one right next to the field. He approached the man sitting next to the empty seat and asked if it was taken. The man replied, ”No.” Amazed, the young man asked, ”How could someone pass up a seat like this?”

The older gentleman responded, ”That’s my wife’s seat. We’ve been to every Super Bowl together since the day we were married, but she has passed away.”

”Oh, how sad,” the young man said. ”I’m sorry to hear that, but couldn’t you find a friend or relative to come with you?”

”No,” the man said, ”They’re all at the funeral.”

Daniel 6:20 says, ”Daniel was on his knees three times a day, praying and giving thanks before his God.” Everyday was Thanksgiving for Daniel, and should be for us as well.

Colossians 3:15 says, ”And be thankful…” Romans 1:21 says ”Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful, but became vain in their indignations, and their foolish heart was darkened.”

– Charles Spurgeon commented on this text. He said ”I cannot say anything much worse of a man than he is not thankful to those who have been his benefactors; and when you say he is not thankful to God, you have said about the worst thing you can say about him.”
